Boyd Tavern, Virginia

Welcome to savingoldplaces.com.

We’re citizens and preservationists who support local, citizen-driven efforts to save local history.

Our stomping grounds are mostly in the mid-Atlantic states, U.S.A. As time goes on, we hope to expand our scope.

At present, we’re not associated with a specific foundation or preservation group. We prefer to engage with the historic community on a case by case basis when time allows.

What’s citizen-driven historic preservation, anyway?

We support responsible citizen-driven preservation, as opposed to government-driven preservation.

To be clear, most historic property is protected under local, state, or federal law. But in order to get a site into protected status, a tremendous amount of citizen driven, grass-roots support is required.

As America grows and ages, many citizens simply assume that government, big-business, higher education, or some other institution, will naturally take charge of our priceless historic assets.

When that happens, we lose site of our responsibilities as free and independent citizens. But that’s not how America was designed.

So why save old places, anyway?

Because history tells us, in spite of many faults and failures, America has set a shining standard for free, just, decent, and prosperous living in the modern world.

As we move away from our past, and our legacy of faith, liberty, integrity, sacrifice, and hard work, we move closer toward decline and demoralization.

So how can you get involved in saving old places?

America’s partnership between our citizens and our elected representatives has proven to be a working success; and as long as our representatives are responsive to citizen input, we look forward to that continuing.

But we don’t want to go to sleep at the wheel. Citizens must stay involved.

Join your local historic society. Volunteer at a nearby museum or battlefield. Learn a skill and partner up with a team of living historians. Get a part time job at a local park.

Help fellow citizens and our American legacy of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It all starts with citizens.

Feel free to drop us a line via email, and let us know your interest in preservation.
